THE NEWMAN PROJECT

The Newman Project emerges onto the LA music scene bringing fresh, hook-laden songs that combine a traditional rock and pop sound with elements of funk, soul, and blues. With influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Stevie Wonder to Janis Joplin, The Newman Project composes raw, catchy melodies that correspond with their poetic lyrics. Their storytelling delivers emotionally driven songs, some poignant like “One Last Time,” some passionate like “No More Running,” and some just plain funky like “Jack Daniels.” TNP reaches for it’s classic rock roots while introducing an updated edge leaving every listener wanting more.

The Newman Project was the brainchild of lead singer/rhythm guitar player Michelle Newman and co-songwriter/producer Tre Carn. Carn listened to Newman playing acoustic originals at a small club in West Hollywood and approached her after hearing her inventive yet almost maudlin adaptation of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin & Juice.” They began meeting regularly writing new material while honing Newman’s earlier original works. Soon after, the other members of TNP, David Morihiro (keyboards), Randy Fox (percussion), and backing players Eric Stone (lead guitar), and Jesse Charland (bass) were approached by Newman and Carn and they enthusiastically hopped aboard. There was an unbelievable dynamic amongst the band from the onset, an instant connection that lends itself to the songs themselves. After extensive private rehearsals as well as live performances throughout Los Angeles, The Newman Project entered the recording studio and put down samples of their work engineered and produced by the legendary Jimmi Mayweather (The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt). Through their work with Jimmi, TNP has truly recaptured a classic sound that can be respected by all generations.

Michelle Newman (lead vocals/rhythm guitar)- Michelle Newman was born in Brooklyn, raised in New Jersey, and eventually settled in New York City. Music was a constant in her life, influenced by classic rock legends from very early on- her parents took her to her first Pink Floyd concert at age 5. Michelle began playing the violin at 4, the piano by 7, the saxophone by 10, and the drums by 14. But it was when she traded in her sax for her first guitar that Michelle’s true passion emerged. While attending NYU pursuing a BFA in Drama, Michelle sang with an acappella group where she received her informal vocal training. She simultaneously began playing out at small bars and clubs throughout Manhattan and was greeted with strong local acclaim. It was only until she moved to Los Angeles that she decided to take her music to the next level, constantly reworking her material and seeking a team of talented musicians to bring the songs to life. She has found that in The Newman Project.

Randy Fox (percussion)- This Seattle native has always been a drummer to the core. And as with all the members of The Newman Project, music and Randy found each other early on. Randy spent his high school years biding his time in local bands and working at the local record store just to be around music. It was at Central Washington University where Randy became well versed in all styles of percussion and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Percussion Performance. He quickly grew into the drummer Los Angeles music critics would later describe as “tuned for seismic resonance,” with a passion for complex, unusual rhythms and tight, human grooves. Randy landed in Los Angeles in 2000 with a mission. Randy was excited to join forces with Michelle to complete The Newman Project. It is Randy’s “seismic” influence in the band that additionally led Music Connection Magazine to also describe Randy as a “drum-tight act.”

David Morihiro (piano/keyboards)- A SoCal native, David started taking piano lessons at an early age of 6. By 8 he was playing in the school band, and by his freshman year of high school was already composing original arrangements. Studying under the teachings of Les Counts, David was able to develop his jazz improvisational skills while at the same time master his classical influences. David is currently attending UCLA pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was able to translate his jazz/classical influences into the LA rock scene with his work in previous bands however it is with The Newman Project that David’s “real” skills have come full circle. After being exposed he has since adapted the legendary styles of Billy Preston, Stevie Wonder, Parliament, and Pink Floyd, and their influences to enhance his own playing and composing.
