This is not a joyride. If a hardcore hijacking is taking place in today’s Ontario music scene, then The Drive-By is the wheelman. An eclectic range of styles is united, from progressive/jazz to punk/hardcore, to make the sound that is The Drive-By. With Influences ranging from Deftones to The Police to Glassjaw to The Beatles, it is clear that this band is not your average punk rock outfit. The Drive-By holds a unique sound able to create dynamics that provoke violent urges one minute, and carefree dancing the next.

The Drive-By’s debut release, A Shameful Waste of Cosmetics, attacks with full force from start to end. The album’s first track, ‘Carbon Romance’, kicks in with powerful drums backing a crisp and full guitar progression that will compel any listener to gravitate towards the dance floor. ‘White Slave’ tells a dark tale of sexuality that showcases haunting and poetic lyricism; and with the song ‘Lungs’ it is apparent that music can, indeed, reflect emotion.

The Drive-By was formed in February of 2004, when Neil Brown (Vocals/Guitar) and Scott Lawson (Bass) met in a school talent show. Not long after, Mike Lawson (Drums) was initiated into the band. Within a month The Drive-By began booking local gigs, borrowing a friend to fill in on bass. However, after some consideration, the band felt most comfortable moving on as a three-piece.

In the past year, The Drive-By’s efforts have definitely not gone unnoticed. Recently, they were selected as 1 of 6 finalists to join Alexisonfire on tour by a group of industry reps and the band themselves. They’ve also received media attention and praise from the likes of College radio, Remix Magazine, and Random Sample Magazine, quoting them as a band that is “poised to take a giant leap into the future of music”. This summer, The Drive-By will shoot a music video for ‘Carbon Romance' and begin touring Southern Ontario in support of their E.P.

The Drive-By has both barrels loaded in this effort, so hop in the trunk and let’s go for a ride.
