Okay, so it's been forever since I updated this blog...well, what can I say? I suck!
Since the last post, in APRIL!!!! Things have gone pretty well.
Morris Entertainment in Winnipeg is handling some of the booking chores now for the club show, and we've put a few dates under our belts as well. I'll put some pictures up here from the past couple of gigs just to prove that I ain't lyin!

Hey kiddies! Yeah, I know.....long time, no update! Well, I'll try and make this as quick and painless as possible. This Thursday, yours truly will be @ the North 40 Saloon in Brandon, performing in the finals of the Westman Idol competition, hopefully coming home with the big prize! It's been a fun month of hard fought competition, but I feel pretty good about what I've done so far. It will all be decided on Thursday, so if you're in the Brandon area, come on out and support your ol buddy!
Secondly, there is a tentative date of July 21st and 22nd booked for "rednoize" my club show, at the lilyfest in Neepawa, MB at the Vivian Hotel. Mark that date down and try and drop by one of the two nights or both! Saturday will be my birthday party, so maybe that would be the best day if you can only make one of them. Meegwetch! |

Well, I'm in Winnipeg and I'm writing this update from the hotel computer, since the cheap bastards dont have internet in the rooms yet!
Anyways, not much to say just that it's freezing cold outside and I'm waiting for Feather to get back from a meeting so we can go eat and then head over to.......BINGO!
Go ahead, laugh! But anytime I get to spend surrounded by other nDns is a good time to me.
Later, maybe a trip to the casino and then who knows???

Hey all! This week has been pretty slow, yes even though it's only Tuesday...
I've got myself some kinda nasty cold so it's been really rough trying to write or sing at all. I see here that TFTGFN and Feather are once again slugging it out in the top twenty both in the global chart and the BOB. Thanks to all who voted. I know it's not a huge deal, but just the fact that folks take the time to listen and show a preference means a lot.
I'll be in Winnipeg for the next three days so updates will probably happen on the weekend or early next week.

Aanii!
Well, yesterday was an eventful day. I was extended an invitation by Gerry "The Big Bear" Barrett to drop by NCI FM in Winnipeg yesterday morning, so Feather and I went over, press kit and CD in hand where we were greeted by the man himself. For those of you who don't know, Gerry is a very popular and well known Ojibway comedian around these parts who has been featured on CBC, the Comedy Network, and APTN. I had been reading Gerry's bio on the NCI website and he and I have a strangely similar background. We are both from the Saugeen rez, we were both adopted by white families during the 60s, and we grew up about 10 minutes from one another, he in Grand Valley and I in Orangeville, Ontario. We attended the same high school, and we both ended up out here in Manitoba!
But anyways, on with the story....
When we arrived, Gerry was still on the air finishing up his daily morning show and we were ushered into the studio to watch him work. Much to my surprise, Gerry sat me down at the mic across from him and proceeded to interview me right then and there, live on the air.
"Alright Brandon, he's here!" he proclaimed. "...and he's brought his brand new CD entitled "redboy" I was totally unprepared for an interview, but did my best at being informative and hopefully, entertaining. He then went on to fire off some questions, congratulate me on my winning the SVDN Winterfest talent contest, and we wrapped up the show talking about our common backgrounds and signed off.
It was then that Gerry showed me why he is so well regarded around here. He took us around the studio, introducing us to all the on air talent, the staff, and finally, Program Director David Mcleod, all the while introducing me like an old friend, speaking very highly of me and my music. He handed my CD over to Mr. Mcleod, who much to my surprise invited us into one of the studios for a little private listening and preview of the CD, asking me questions about it, and ultimately telling me how incredibly talented he thought I was and that "redboy" would be a wonderful addition to the NCI FM playlist. He also showed interest in having me do some production work at NCI, and mentioned that "redboy" would likely enter the "Aboriginal Top 30" list. He told me he was very excited about what I was doing and to come by the studio any time I am in Winnipeg. He then asked me if I would record some promos for the station and I was led into another studio to record myself saying, "Hi this is Ron from Redboy and you're listening to NCI FM, real people, real radio." which I was told will air regularly in the future.
After I finished in the studio, I was very honoured when David told me he was going to put my picture up on the "wall of fame" which included some of the greatest aboriginal artists of this century, including Robbie Robertson, Buffy Saint Marie, and Susan Aglukark.
It was such a positive and inspiring morning that I will not soon forget. To walk in a complete stranger, unknown to any of them, and be treated with such respect and dignity, to have my music honoured in such a way, is an experience that I will treasure for a long time. Gerry really took me under his wing and presented me to everyone like I was some kind of celebrity and I am truly thankful for having been blessed with such a kind and giving friend. I look forward to my new relationship with NCI, Gerry Barrett, and the whole crew over in Winnipeg.
Now, I am not going to let this all go to my head. I have a lot of work to do to still on many of these songs and there are plenty of new ones in the works as well. I look forward to showcasing them on NCI and hopefully, many other stations across Turtle Island.
Finally, I am so glad that I got to share that whole experience with Feather, for if it weren't for her, none of this would have ever happened. She is the inspiration for most of these songs, and my reason for being. Her love for me and her support and encouragement, are the greatest gift I have ever been given. My success is her success and I want to share every joyous moment with her.
So, that's it folks. These are very exciting times indeed!

I am thrilled to announce that this weekend, I won the "Men's Grand Champion" title at the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation's Winterfest singing competition. Facing a barrage of Country acts in a very country oriented venue, I pulled out an unexpected victory, so unexpected that I missed the awards ceremony because I went for dinner!!! oops!
Anyways, I am very honoured to carry the title and I look forward to defending it next year!

Thanks to everyone who has listened to and voted for "Feather" and "The flower that grew from nothing" They are currently in the global top 20 and though I put very little importance on charts and popularity contests, it is truly gratifying to have my work appreciated on such a grand stage. All my love and sincerest thanks to everyone for this wonderful honour.
