In October 2004, friends and schoolmates Jonathan Pakozdi (guitar), Robin Tunley (bass) and Reg McLean (guitar) decided to put together a band to perform in their schools annual Ensemble Night. They quickly recruited Jonathan Hann (drums) and began a rigourous practice schedule. The plan was to create a vessel for each member to show off their musical talents and technical ability, but mostly to just have fun. Originally performing under the name Smell the Glove (ŕ la Rob Reiner’s Spinal Tap), they played many small shows in and around Toronto, mostly for close friends. Positive audience reaction, however, caused the members to consider taking what they did a little more seriously.

After performing at a fund-raising event at their high school, Etobicoke School of the Arts, the band was approached by a representative of Team S&S Promotions, and offered an opening spot at a local show. The band was unprepared for such an offer, as up until then they had not written any original music, but decided to go ahead regardless.

Following their first gig with Team S&S in January 2005, they played several more still under the name Smell the Glove. It was around this time the band felt they needed something more. This need was fulfilled with the addition of schoolmate Brian Fong (saxophone.) Brian’s contribution to the music of Smell the Glove changed the musical framework of the band and made them realize that a new name was in order. After several weeks of debate, Approaching Zero was decided upon; a reference to a mathematical formula.

On April 21, 2005, Approaching Zero played their biggest gig to date, opening for musical legend Leon Russell at The Big Bop in Toronto. The positive feedback from a crowd demographic they were not used to encouraged the band even more. Since then, Approaching Zero has played many more shows with Team S&S at local venues such as The Reverb, Funhaus, and Reilly’s. They have also played several independent gigs at venues such as The Trinport and various local high schools.

Approaching Zero has a very unique sound, with each member adding a different flavour to the music. Their songs span many genres including funk, ska, metal, swing, jazz, blues, fusion and progressive. Approaching Zero’s high energy brand of “funk-fusion” coupled with a professional attitude towards rehearsal and composition make for not only an engaging live show, but also a substantial musical experience.
