Musician Wanted
Jul 6, 08 Hurst Band wants Any Musician Rara Avis for drummer and guitarist preeminent, rare, single, singular, sole, solitary, special, strange, sui generis, transcendent, uncommon, unequaled, unexampled, unparalleled, unprecedented, unrivaled, unusual Applying to the project our "band" will become. we are starting from scratch and taking a rara avis (unique) approach to...covers. covers have been done as many fans and players presume them to be. note for note, near exact emulations of them, but this is a tired, worn out concept and but one "school of thought" for the unimaginative, lazy, "music whore" who seeks a easy means to basically masturbate muscially and artistically. Are you that drummer and guitarist who "has what it will take"? Vocal skills a plus, but not required. Imagination a must. Creativity and thinking out of the box an option you need to have at all times. These are never negotiable, ever. We have 22 songs that you will choose 11 from that you MUST have a basic understanding and skill to jam with. Not perfect note for note. Emphasis on the word "jam". When you arrive to audition for this band in the making you will have to be ready to play those 11 songs you hand picked from the main audition's list and not come needing to learn ANY of YOUR part. Not seeking a copyist. Not interested in note for note covers (that has already been done). Auditioning with the covers in their original form will merely be a test of your moxy. Need instead an open minded drummer and guitarist who is very flexible artistically so that once we have gone over the 11 you have chosen we will then expand on these "covers" and "make them our own". You need to be ready to spend some time with us once you arrive. Be focused and ready for the long haul. Can you "jam"? Can you "improvise"? Extended solo? Remix? Remake? Do you know your music history so that you can appreciate or do you have a very narrow, limited view? Can you, would you, like "green eggs and ham"? We know you do, so step forward and show us what you got. Pick your 11 from our list of non typical covers (Ie no Rocky Mountain Way, no Paranoid, no "Texas' best rock", nothing you'd hear on KZPS, no typical, tired already been done, dead horses.) A "heavy" song might become "unplugged". An acoustic song might become "edgy". A piano based song might become "guitar driven". Only our collective, cooperative, ideas will be the limit. These are but examples of this collaborative artistic band that will not settle for less. We will remake these songs much like artists have done since the beginning of popular radio to this present day. Own them as if they were written for us/ by us. Our repertoire include covers from artists/ bands like these and these are just a beginning of what we will "cover": Van Morrison, Split Enz, Steely Dan, Thom York, Venus In Furs, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Sweet, Aldo Nova, The Police, Blondie, April Wine, Men At Work, The Cars, The Church, Brian Eno, T. Rex, Pink Floyd, Nora Jones, Leonard Sweet, Burt Bacharach, The Carpenters, Alice In Chains, Powerman 5000, The Clash, Black Tie Dynasty, Metallica, Johnny Cash, NIN, Rob Zombie, Ozzy Osbourn, Erasure, Men Without Hats, Tubes, Journey, Foreigner, Joss Stone, Alanis Morissette, Dido, Sade, etc. Stylistically (genres) would include: pop, punk, rock, reggae, country, classical, jazz, jam, metal, fusion, funk, hip hop, trip hop, r & b, hard rock, indie rock, lounge, ambient trance, symphonic, folk, etc. We are NOT looking to cover these per say, but only for the sake of reference use this as an example of the "influences" we'll draw upon and then "own" the cover instead of render the typical carbon copy performance the average cover bands will put forth. Contact us and we will send you the full list of 22 songs. Choose your 11 and then we will rehearse and then if you are what "we are interested in" then you will be become a full member of this unnamed band. We have a bassist, female vocalist with some keyboard skills, lead vocalist who plays lead/ rhythm guitar, and keys. Know your part and be able to first do the cover as usual to them go beyond the expected "sound". Examples could be how Mariah Carey "covered" Def Leppards "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and "owned" the song. She also did an excellent "rendition" of "Open Arms" by Journey. Consider how there are at least 10 markets: AOR, AOP, Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, etc and at times you will hear multiple "versions" of the same song. Consider how artists like Eric Clapton take their song like "Lelah" and in our opinion improve it by slowing it down and making it an "unplugged" version. Consider how artists like Elvis, The Rolling Stones, etc. would take a song done by Muddy Waters and "selfishly" own the song doing it their way, their style. These are but examples of how this has been done and our goal is to step up and deliever unique, outstanding, performances of familiar songs that are not often ones that get alot of air play per say, but are B-sides, rare, fan favorites, concert favorites. For example, Nora Jones did her version of Hank Williams, Sr.'s "Cold Cold Heart" so we do our version of Nora Jone's version of Hank William's "Cold Cold Heart". Get it? Good, then get on board. Don't get it? Don't waste your or our time then. Pass it along to that drummer, or lead guitarist who has the moxy, mentality, personality, who will be able to become a permanent member of this "band" with full rights, input, artisti direction...freedom. We're waiting and we believe in you.
